Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, dies

Cupertino: Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs died on Wednesday. He was 56 years old. He had been battling cancer and other health issues for several years and had a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Apple announced his death late on Wednesday night without giving a specific cause.

Hurricane Irene bears down on large East Coast cities

Ocean City, Maryland (CNN) — Residents in several major East Coast cities — including Washington, Philadelphia and New York — braced late Saturday for the impact from Hurricane Irene. By Saturday evening, the storm had already knocked out power in more than a million homes, forced more than a million people off the New Jersey shore alone and caused at least nine deaths.

Gaddafi era over: Libya rebel chief

BENGHAZI: Libyan rebel leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil on Monday hailed the end of the four-decade “Gaddafi era,” after his fighters took control of most of Tripoli. “The Gaddafi era is over,” he told a press conference in Benghazi, eastern Libya, referring to Libya’s veteran leader Gaddafi.

Report shows rise in world restrictions on religion

Nearly a third of the world’s population lives in countries where it is becoming more difficult to freely practice religion, a private US research group reported on Tuesday.The Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life said government restrictions and public hostility involving religion grew in some of the most populous countries from mid-2006 to mid-2009.

11 feared dead as Russian plane crashes in East Siberia

Moscow (CNN) — A cargo plane crashed in the Russia’s East Siberia, apparently killing all eleven people on board, Russian transport officials reported Tuesday. The Antonov-12 plane carrying nine crew members and two passengers as well as 16 tons of food was en route Tuesday from the Far East city of Magadan northwards to the Chukotka peninsula when it disappeared from radars some 300 kilometers, or 190 miles, from its take-off point, the Russian Far East Transport Prosecutor’s Office said on its website.

Tentative calm in London after violence

London (CNN) — After a fourth consecutive night of violence that convulsed much of London and spread elsewhere in Britain, the scene before dawn Wednesday was largely calm, a tentative calm enforced by thousands of police. Hours before, police reported outbreaks of violence in Wolverhampton and West Bromwich, about 100 miles north of London, and in the northwestern city of Manchester. There, a library and supermarket were ablaze, said Jeff Gill from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue.

Asian stocks tumble after Wall Street rout

SYDNEY: Asian equity markets were sharply down early on Tuesday as investors fearing a possible global economic slowdown continued to flee stocks. Oil fell below USD 78 per barrel, toppling to its lowest price of the year on concerns that a slowing global economy could crimp demand for fuel.  Japan’s Nikkei 225 index plunged 4.4 per cent to 8,694.31 in the morning session, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index plummeted 7.3 per cent to 18,998.51. South Korea’s Kospi index plummeted 8.2 per cent to 1,716.05.

Saudi billionaire to build tallest tower

JEDDAH: Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal unveiled plans yesterday to build the world’s tallest tower in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah, signing a 4.6 billion riyal ($1.23 billion) contract with Bin Laden Group. The proposed tower, which will rise more than 1,000 meters and take just over five years to complete, is the centerpiece of the planned Kingdom City development being built outside Jeddah by Prince Alwaleed’s Kingdom Holding.
