Kuwait – A Kuwaiti surgeon conducted a rare gastric sleeve surgery using surgical speculum to a patient weighing about 300 kilograms.

Consultant of General surgery and surgical speculum consultant at Amiri Hospital Dr. Walid Khaled Al-Bastaki told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the gastric sleeve surgery he conducted on the 39-year-old patient was very rare because of the weight of the patient The patient left hospital after six days only of the operation, which was conducted last week, he pointed out.

Al-Bastaki said that such surgeries enable patient to lose between 12 and 15 kilograms in the first week after the operation. He said he created five openings in the patient’s stomach, where each opening ranges from half a centimeter to one centimeter.

Al-Bastaki added that the patient has been suffering from a dangerous level of obesity over the past years that has left them incapacitated and suffering from discomfort in their movements, in addition to causing them great difficulty breathing and the inability to sleep due to lack of oxygen, which resulted in a threat to their life.

He said the operation, which lasted nearly two hours, was a success, pointing out that its importance lies in the fact that it will allow the patient to lost weight gradually after all the other usual means have failed.

He added that in this type of operation, the patient loses 12 to 15 kilograms during the first week.He stressed that the patient was discharged from hospital to return to his normal life.

He praised all the facilities available at the Department of Surgery at Amiri hospital for aiding in the ease of such surgeries, even the rare ones, pointing out that this type of operation would have required the patient to go abroad, but is now easy to do within the country.
