Kuwait: An informed source disclosed to Al Watan that the Ministry of Communication is preparing to install telecommunication cables that connect Kuwait with the other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States. The ministry will adopt a new fee structure for international calls between Kuwait and the GCC States after executing this project.

According to the new system, fees will be charged from subscribers per second unlike the current system in which fees is charged per minute. The system will be applied to local calls as well.

The source added that the ministry will hold meetings with representatives of the local telecom companies in order to finalize the issue of determining the new fees.

A number of Gulf telecom companies have already asked the ministry to reduce the fees of roaming service between GCC states before September 2011. The ministerial committees of the GCC States also held a series of meetings to discuss the possibility of reducing the fees of roaming service. The committee recommended reducing the fees by 15 percent.

The source added that the local telecom companies are preparing to apply the new instructions and system within the current month. The companies are expected to inform their subscribers about the new fees structure very soon.
