Kuwait: While the majority of Kuwaiti drivers use their cell phones while driving, a recent study indicated that little more than half of Kuwaitis send text messages while behind the wheel, reported Al-Qabas.

The study, carried out by professor of sociology at Kuwait University Dr Zakiya Al-Hashmi, indicated that 94% of Kuwaiti drivers who participated in the survey admitted to talking on their cell phones while driving. Additionally, 53% of respondents confessed to sending or receiving text messages while on the road.

Furthermore, the study noted that 10% of those who participated in the survey suffered a traffic accident as a result of using the phone while driving.

While warning that using a phone while driving for more than 10 minutes increases the risks of accidents by four times, Al-Hashmi pointed out that even hands-free headsets don’t necessarily reduce the risk of car accidents.

In both cases the driver is distracted because the level of distraction affects the quality of a person’s driving equally,” said Al-Hashmi while quoting a study. The study also mentioned the results of an experiment that found that the quality of a person driving with a cell phone is the same as a person driving under the influence of alcohol.

Additionally, the study pointed out that Kuwaiti citizens had the highest number of road accidents in 2008, drawing a connection between the increase in accidents and those using cell phones while driving.

Even if they don’t text, most of them give a damn about the safety of themselves or the other cars. They speed when they want to. If they are in a relaxed mood, they drive on 60 on the first lane. They change lanes without signals and if you honk, they drive next to you, spit at you and curse you. Money can buy things, but not class.
