Serious diseases linked to bad eating habits in Kuwait
Kuwait: The department of food resources at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) has conducted a nutritional poll, in coordination with the department of nutrition and food of the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Suaad Al-Houti, a researcher at the department, told KUNA that the study was the first national one, designed to examine the feeding regime of the citizens, and the linkage of eating habits, kinds of food, with some widespread diseases.
She affirmed the necessity to examine the eating habits to look into the causes of widespread diseases and illnesses, namely diabetes, obesity, cardiac troubles and high blood pressure. Such knowledge is vital to change the wrong eating habits, the doctor said.
The poll was applied on a sample representing 1,693 families picked up from the country’s six provinces. The sample comprised 7,547 nationals, aged between five and 50.
The study showed that the proportion of overweight reached 35 percent for males and 28 percent among the females. However, the proportion among the adults was as high as 70 percent among males and 75 percent among the females.
Those suffering from diabetes amounted to 15 percent. Its spread among the females was slightly higher than among the males. But its proportion among those aged 50 stood at 50 percent.
More than 22 percent of the males and 27 percent of the females suffer from low metabolism and 30 percent suffer from high cholesterol. It also reached 60 percent among the females aged 50 and above.Anemia among the women stood at 28 percent for the category aged between 20 and 49, as well as 23 percent for the 50 age category.
Dr. Al-Houti noted that the study showed excessive consumption of proteins, fats and carbohydrates among the nationals, and that intakes of health ingredients such as fibers and omegas were less than the required, in addition to sharp drop of intakes of vitamins d, h, G and B.
More than 50 percent of the sample suffered depletion of calcium, zinc and magnesium.Dr. Al-Houti affirmed necessity for revision of the eating habits in Kuwait, with emphasis on diversification of ingredients.
