Conditions at deportation centre catch panel’s eye

Kuwait – The Parliament’s Human Rights Committee will start holding meetings from next week to address a number of issues and will focus on the conditions at the deportation center, reports Al-Shahid daily.

According to Committee Chairman MP Waleed Al-Tabtabaie, the committee will invite Interior and Foreign Affairs ministers to discuss the issue. The committee will discuss the possibility of allowing every detainee a fair hearing on humanitarian grounds, he added.

Al-Tabtabaie alleged that the government enforces its decisions oppressively and hinted that those who use ‘wasta’ to get some detainees released is evidence of partiality in applying law.

“The committee will discuss within the next few days a draft law on incriminating trafficking in people and a draft law on domestic personnel and will forward them to the assembly in the coming term,” added the lawmaker.

Former National Assembly contestant, Mohammad Al-Juwaihel, is surprised the Ministry of Interior (MOI) has not made any effort to investigate the two citizens who attempted to assassinate him, while he was at a hospital last month, reported Al-Rai daily.

“MOI neither confirmed nor refuted my accusation, as if the matter is not their concern or Mohammad Al-Juwaihel is not an original Kuwaiti citizen”, Al-Juwaihel argued, stating the government now has a golden chance to reveal those holding dual citizenship and ‘double loyalty’, considering mobile messages received recently from the border exits confirmed clashes taking place between Kuwaiti and Iraqi forces.

“Perhaps, this gloomy event will finally keep the government on its toes, in order that it would believe our statements about the people who have been exposed through the blackberry message”, he added.

MP Mubarak Al-Waalan criticized permanent Iraqi envoy to the Arab League Qais Al-Azzawi’s remarks on demarcation of borders between Kuwait and Iraq, reports Alam Al-Yawm daily.Al-Waalan affirmed that the border demarcation issue was settled with mutual agreement by both sides based on Security Council’s resolution No. 833 and added that “we will not give up any part of Kuwaiti lands.” The lawmaker said he found it strange that Iraqi people in leadership positions keep raising this issue from time to time and stressed that the border issue is settled and nobody is waiting for the acknowledgment of Al-Azzawi or anybody else for that matter.

Al-Waalan asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take a decisive stance in this matter and called on Iraq to stay committed to international resolutions on demarcation of borders and respecting neighbors.

The Iraqi envoy’s statement reveals Iraqi government’s bad intentions towards Kuwait, said the lawmaker, adding “we should end our relations with Iraq, so it realizes the value and size of Kuwait.”
