MP proposes grace period & awareness campaigns to help illegals
Kuwait City – The Ministry of Interior (MoI) must quickly take the necessary steps to end the suffering of marginal workers, especially those exploited by visa traders, MP Adnan Al-Muttawa said Thursday.
Urging the ministry to allow those found to have violated the Residency Law to leave the country, Al-Muttawa suggested giving a grace period to those who have no residency permits and those who cannot renew their expired visa for various reasons.
He added the ministry should not impose fines or interrogate these expatriates, provided they are not involved in security cases. He recommended launching an intensive public awareness campaign in various languages for the benefit of thousands of expatriates, who are either languishing in deportation cells or hiding in residential areas. He believes these measures can also greatly contribute to the ministry’s efforts to combat crimes and track down visa traders.
Al-Muttawa said the ministry needs to coordinate with its commerce, social affairs and labor counterparts, as well as Kuwait Municipality, to eliminate visa trading and human trafficking. He pointed out many expatriates have fallen victim to visa traders, resulting in the lopsided population structure of Kuwait and high number of marginal workers.
In another development, MP Khalid Al-Adwa has presented a proposal on forming a higher committee, which will be under the supervision of judges from the Ministry of Justice and Audit Bureau officials, to assess the financial losses incurred by government institutions over the last five years.
Al-Adwa said the panel should submit a report to the Parliament upon completion of its task, so the legislature can take the necessary measures against those behind the losses. He explained he came up with this proposal to help the government in its bid to stop the financial irregularities in public institutions.
