Kuwait to improve its communication cables

Cairo – A Kuwaiti delegation from the Ministry of Communication met with Egyptian officials on Thursday where they discussed means of cooperation on international marine and land-based cables.

Head of the delegation, Abdulmuhsen al-Mutairi (who presides over the committee for marine and land-based cables in Kuwait) told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that he held productive talks with the head of Egypt’s national department for communication Omar Badawi, spanning bilateral relations on a number of mutual issues, the most salient of which regarding marine and land-based cables.

Al-Mutairi, who holds the post of assistant undersecretary of communication for legal affairs, underlined that the visit by the delegation follows the Ministry of Communication’s strategic plan to open up Kuwait for marine and land-based cables to go through it, in a bid to boost the overall capabilities of communication in the country.

Such acquired capabilities dovetail with Kuwait’s stated aspirations to assume the role of a major regional economic and financial hub, said al-Mutairi, thereby augmenting the ministry’s capacity to transmit information across Kuwait and beyond, consequently increasing revenues from such an undertaking.

Regarding these lofty goals, he said that the committee he oversees has recently been in contact with numerous Arab and international firms well-versed in trans-national marine and land-based cable technologies.

Currently, he affirmed, the committee is contemplating the passage of six new cables within Kuwait’s territory, three of which through the Al-Khafji port of entry and three more through Al-Salmi. These cables would be linked with international cables in the Red Sea via Saudi Arabian territories, he said, adding that there would also be two new marine cables that would stretch from Kuwait into the waters of the Arabian Gulf.

He expressed his ministry’s willingness to pursue numerous avenues to enable Kuwait to have agreements with international firms that deal with the amelioration of marine and land-based cable technologies.
