Indian Govt lifts ban on Indians going to Iraq for work
New Delhi: The government has lifted the ban on Indians travelling for work or academics to Iraq. The ministry of external affairs felt the situation in Iraq had stabilised and at least some parts of the country were safe. The ban was imposed in 2004.
The move comes after consultations between the MEA and the ministry of overseas Indian affairs. ‘‘MEA has lifted the ban and we concurred with their opinion on the matter,’’ Vayalar Ravi, overseas Indian affairs minister, said.
Incidentally, there is a growing demand for skilled and unskilled personnel in Iraq and Indians have been working there for some time now. Unofficial estimates peg the number at about 80,000.
Indians enter Iraq via Kuwait, Syria or Dubai and thanks to Iraq’s visa-on-arrival policy, official documents never acknowledge the number living in Iraq.
