Meet Saad Akhtar: The Twitter Indian of the Year

indian-twitter Mumbai: So here it is cut and dry. The French revolution of Twitterverse, the emancipation of the common man, the triumph of the proletariat. And all that. Ok, we jest. However there is one emotion that’s caught us off guard and that is one of surprise. Saad Akhtar, the creator of the comic strip Fly You Fools has trumped Shashi Tharoor by 2 per cent.

Coming in third was Priyanka Chopra.

Since the launch of the MiD DAY Twitter Indian of the Year award one week ago, we’re overwhelmed to have received over 6000 votes and have been the subject of some fierce campaigning on Twitter.

Twitter Indian of the Year

Saad Akhtar                   34%
Shashi Tharoor               32%
Priyanka Chopra             10%
Asfaq Tapia and friends  5%
Mallika Sherawat             4%
Anand Mahindra              4%
Gul Panag                        3%
Chetan Bhagat                 3%
Pritish Nandy                   2%
Vir Sanghvi                      2%

Delhite Akhtar is the man guilty of expressing an opinion. It was his sarcasm that prompted author Chetan Bhagat to block him, leading to the now infamous #chetanblocks tag that cost the author much goodwill – goodwill that he was fortunate to recover following his subsequent real life fiasco.

But this is not about that story. This is about how Twitter has shaped your conversations over coffee, your instant messages and your social life in cyberspace this year. And we’re proud to crown a Tweeter, not very different from you, to have been the small man who made the big noises, 140 characters or less, this year.
