MEW Kuwait speeds up pre-paid meter project

Kuwait: As part of the Ministry of Electricity and Water’’s plan to use modern technology to collect revenue, Minister Dr. Bader AlـShuraian has given instructions to speed up the preparation of the project by replacing the mechanical meters currently being used with prepaid meters.

The minister gave instructions to float a tender within the next few days, with the project to be applied to commercial and investment institutions, and later another project to be carried out to install prepaid meters residences.

Minister AlـShuraian has met with experts from the Consumers Affairs Department, who have been tasked with preparing the tender for importing and installing the prepaid meters in order to finalize the tender which will be floated within the coming few days.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of the Consumers Affairs Department Jassem AlـLinqawi has asked all citizens to visit Consumers Affairs Offices before Oct. 25 in all governments to reach a compromise over their debts to the ministry and to benefit from Law No. 48 regarding scrapping 2,000 Kuwaiti dinars from their unpaid electrical bills.He said that the sector seeks to help citizens to pay their debts back to the ministry.

In another development, AlـLinqawi said that a team from his sector has taken part in a Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, conference at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of GCC. He said that the attendants agreed to conduct lectures and offered their services to consumers in Gulf States. He further added that the attendants agreed to conduct a survey so as to know consumer opinions on the services offered to them and also their recommendations in this regard. He added that they discussed exchanging expertise amongst Gulf states in respect of using prepaid meters as well as other plans to develop this important sector.
