461,809 car accidents in Kuwait in past 10 years
Kuwait: Chairman of the Traffic Safety Society Bader AlـMatar has stated that Kuwait over the last ten years has witnessed 461,809 car accidents, which in turn led to the death of 3,817 people.In a press statement released on Saturday, AlـMatar said that official statistics show that the car accident rate increased during the decade of 1999 to 2008, adding that the yearly average number of car accidents reached around 46,000, causing the death of 380 people per annum.
AlـMatar said that the Interior Ministry and Traffic Safety Society “exert great efforts to reduce car accidents,” stressing the need for developing a clear strategy to reduce the number of deaths.He added that the International Traffic Conference, which has been organized by the society and will begin its activities on Oct.11 under the patronage of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser AlـMohammed AlـSabah, is part of the society”s plan to increase traffic awareness and develop shortـterm and longـterm strategies to reach the desired goal, which is a reduction in the annual number of automobile accidents in Kuwait.
AlـMatar explained that a number of experts from Europe, Turkey and other countries will take part in the conference and present their country”s expertise in reducing the auto accident rate in order to help Kuwait benefit from these experiences. He added that car accidents are the leading cause of of deaths and injuries in the country and cost the State millions of dinars through offer healthcare services to the victims, who usually suffer incurable injuries.
