This news in TOI, shocked me. Is India following western culture?
India is known for family values are we loosing them.
Is it due to non respect for families or their partners?
People lost faith in marriage. Feelings are dead.

Readers provide your views on above topic.
thanks

IMHO... it is not a bad thing at all...
Earlier, a couple in an unhappy marriage stayed unhappy, destroying a home from within... all this because of societal pressure.
The reasons of unhappiness could be many... even those days there was adultery & infidelity and dishonesty between spouses.
Every problem a couple faces today was faced even then... the difference now is that a couple in a distressful marriage is able to stand up for themselves and claim their lives back. Men & women who were forced to live a lie (a loveless lie) all their lives just because of the concept of a 'sacred' institution of marriage, no longer need to do so.
When a married couple are separated in their minds, and there is no love or understanding in their hearts towards each other then living together as husband and wife is what is the real insult to the institution of marriage.
Earlier, when the wife was the sufferer in a loveless marriage, she was asked to hold fort by her elders in the name of honor... now as most women are financially independent and bolder they can decide to move on and face the consequences.
It is not much different for men... though in comparison men had it easier 'coz society tends to forgive men easily.

Err... For starters why dont you post the link of the news article so that people can read what the article says?

A rise in divorce cases does not necessarily mean that family values have gone down. Until recently people did not have the choice of a divorce. They used to live in their marriage no matter how incompatible they were. Now they have a choice to leave it and start afresh.

It does not have to be because there was a decline in family values, respect or feelings.

Thats another thing that always bugged me. Whats so sacred about it?? It is a commitment. But thats about it. Nothing sacred about the whole concept.

I don't know either... hence the quotes! :D
But yeah... I guess in a cut-throat, cruel world, any sort of committment that involves trust must be sacred! :)
